I have recently gotten into trying different kinds of tea and herbal teas (yes I am aware herbal tea technically isn't tea but I will refer to it as such for simplicity) mainly for mild health benefits -- of which I am somewhat unsure if there are significant affects -- but also as a kind of hobby. I want with the winter coming up I need something to look forward to, to keep me from spiralling, so I decided that I will try new types of tea! I will show you a list of five teas I have tried (four herbal), what I think of the taste and whether or not I think it helped health-wise, although keep in mind I think most herbal benefits are potentially placebo and it is hard to find resources that are not from herbalist companies or organisations.
Black tea
I am from Scotland, it is a given I would have drank black tea in my time. This is probably what I usually drink on a day-to-day basis, though I do not think I notice any effects of the caffeine. I let it steep for 5 minutes then add milk, no sugar. I like drinking it but I struggle to rate this as it is my default tea, so I think I will leave it unrated.
Nettle tea
I love nettle tea, more than I thought I would at first. It is grassy, earthy and goes down smooth. It goes well with honey but I usually drink it on its own. You can find stinging nettle in the summertime in the UK though I have not tried to forage my own yet. I would rate it 8/10.
Lemon & Ginger tea
I initially bought this because I heard it could help with inflammation and pain as well as a vitamin C source. From what I understand, it has some benefits but not a lot? I do not have any personal experience in this regard just yet. It tastes earthy and citrus-y as you would expect, and honey does not change the flavour much. It feels like something from the flavour is missing, maybe it is because I am used to eating ginger in gingerbread, so drinking ginger seems strange. 6/10.
Peppermint tea
For most of my life I disliked the taste of mint outside of mint choco ice cream, though I have come around to it a bit in recent years. Peppermint helped my clogged and sniffly sinuses, so it does have some benefit. It is nice, I think I prefer this to the lemon and ginger as it has a more refreshing taste and pairs nicely with honey. 7/10.
Hibiscus tea
I LOVE hibiscus tea! I've had it plenty of times and I love the sweet, fruity and tart flavour! I think this is the only tea I've drunk where I understand what people mean when they say they savour the taste of tea, because most of the time when I drank tea I either felt neutral or only mildly positive to the taste of it, and did not really see the point in focusing on the flavour. I do not have it often, though, as it is hard to come by for me. 9/10.
Future teas
Teas I am hoping to try (or try again) in the future: heather tea, rooibos, raspberry leaf tea, matcha, berry- or fruit-based tea and lavender tea. I may make another post in the future when I have tried all these teas.
